Both USGS and Copernicus provide data search and download through an Application Programming Interface (API). API access for querying and downloading Landsat and Sentinel data has been integrated in the ACOLITE distribution. Options exist to search available scenes for a region of interest and a date range, or to search for a specific scene. Additionally, when specifying a scene that does not exist locally, it is possibly to query, download, and process the scene automatically. These options and the configuration of API credentials are further detailed in posts on the ACOLITE forum for EarthExplorer and CDSE.
The following Figure shows an example where a local copy of the scene does not exist, and it is downloaded automatically from CDSE before downloading by setting scene_download = True:
