Aquaculture is the farming of fish, crustaceans, molluscs and aquatic plants. It is an innovative and sustainable technology which could help increase food production and decrease overfishing.
In the Belgian part of the North Sea two zones have been set aside – under the Marine Spatial Plan – at which sustainable aquaculture is permitted, i.e. the wind turbine concession zones for Belwind (phase 1) and C-Power. Permission was granted on condition that the aquaculture activity reduces seawater eutrophication in these zones.
Although several new ideas have been proposed for aquaculture in Belgium, no commercial aquaculture activities have been set up, as yet, in our part of the North Sea.
